Real World Applications

The technology is simple, robust and portable supporting a wide variety of knowledge sharing and learning applications, from remote regional contexts to formal teaching and conference settings. The primary applications to-date have focused on supporting savanna fire management in northern Australia. Building on this recent collaborations with geographic research institutes in Mexico has led to the adoption of 3D printed, projection augmented landscapes for supporting sustainable agricultural development.

During multiple implementations of the model with Arnhemland communities (2017-2018), the projection augmented landscapes have captivated participants and allowed senior people to share lived experiences of fire on country with younger generations and non-Indigenous colleagues and teaching staff. Empowerment of  indigenous knowledge in a field dominated by hard scientific data. Many of these applications have been conducted 'out-bush' at night under the star creating a 'digital campfire' bringing people in to discuss fire managment.

Government Community Engagment

The models were used by the Northern Territory Government Bushfires Council on the 2018 rural show circuit to explain fire management and across the N.T. Northern Savannas. A purpose-built darkroom was created within the government NRM tent to assist with engaging the public around best practice fire managment.

Conference Demonstrations

The models have been used in multiple formal conference settings to engage the audience around specific landscape process issues.

Higher-Education Teaching

Student engagement in CDU field ecology classes through 3D gaming of complex fire management issues has been substantially increased through interactive and tangible engagement resulting in deep learning of fire ecology in a way that did not happen before the PAPL use.  Similar ‘new’ learning was described from Mexico through the use of 3D Printed Landscapes for teaching hydrological processes.

In order to build a greater understanding of the impacts of changing agricultural practices on soil health “Guerrero es Primero”, a local NGO working on sustainable development, and Centro Geo, a geographic research institute from Mexico City, have developed a participatory spatial planning strategy, in which soil erosion assessment is central. A projection augmented landscape model is being used to support community engagement workshops to facilitate this participatory spatial planning.

Congo Basin

A 3D printed projection augmented landscape supporting a UK (Darwin Initiative)  funded project working with Baka Pygmy communities in the southeastern region in Cameroon. This project has been producing large amounts of data reflecting the use of forest resources through hunting and the collection of non-timber forest products. The Projection Augmented Landscape is being used to display and communicate the spatial data collected through collaboration with the Bakka.
